The Wildcats’ football team struggled to score points while a Whitehouse quarterback and receiver combo clicked once in each quarter as Whitehouse defeated the Wildcats, 28-6 in Whitehouse on Homecoming Friday night (September 22). It was the seventh straight victory for Whitehouse over the Wildcats.
Whitehouse wasted no time scoring on its first drive of the game. Senior Quarterback Jacob Clemons teamed up with junior receiver Cameron Cantrell on a 33-yard touchdown pass as Whitehouse completed a 60-yard opening drive. Whitehouse led 7-0 with 10:06 remaining in the first quarter. Both teams defenses then took over for most of the rest of the first half. Clemons and Cantrell clicked again with just over 3 minutes left in the second quarter and Whitehouse went up, 14-0. That was the halftime score.
The Wildcats were limited to about 125 yards of offense in the first two quarters. Twice they penetrated into Whitehouse territory before they stalled. One drive ended down around the 15 yard line. The third quarter featured more of the same. Clemons again found Cantrell for a 66-yard TD pass at the 3:31 mark of the third quarter and Whitehouse led, 21-0.
Just before the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats put together their best drive of the night. The big play of the drive was a pass from senior quarterback Ryan Humphries to senior B Back Logan Caton, who hurdled one tackler and rumbled down to around the 15 yard line. As the fourth quarter began, Humphries raced up the middle for 6 yards just getting into the end zone for a touchdown. A bad snap doomed the extra point kick but the Wildcats were back to within 21-6 with 11:53 still left in the fourth quarter. A short time later, the Wildcats got their first turnover of the season as safety Austin Dodd recovered a Whitehouse fumble at around the Whitehouse 40 yard line. The Wildcats drive stalled. Later it was Clemons throwing to Cantrell again for another touchdown and Whitehouse went up, 28-6. An apparent late TD by Whitehouse on a 40-yard run was negated by a penalty and Whitehouse settled for a 28-6 win.
Whitehouse is now 3-1 for the season while the Wildcats slip to 2-2.
The Wildcats open district play next Friday (September 29) at Prim Stadium against Pine Tree. The Pirates are 0-4 this season after a Friday night home loss to Henderson.
