At their last meeting, the board of Hopkins County Memorial Hospital voted to go on to phase two planning for the hospital possibly getting involved in a Graduate Medical Education Program with UT Health North East in Tyler. CEO Michael McAndrew says the next major issues are approval of a contract between the two and then identifying a program director for the program. McAndrew says the residency program seems to be something the hospital should do. He sees the program adding the same kind of excitement as when the hospital added its heart program. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Chris Gallagher sees a benefit in recruiting and training physicians in rural family practice. He says UT Health North East is very well respected.
