Miller Grove News by Brandon Darrow 01/30/2015

This week I have a few bits and pieces of news to share with the community. You know, any good reporter needs to “find” news wherever he or she goes. And, that’s exactly what I did Thursday night. While driving down FM 1567, I noticed a lot of smoke billowing up from the County Road 1152 area of the Center Point community. On further inspection it looked like one of the pastures in the bottoms was on fire. I counted four fire trucks rushing toward the pasture as I snaked down the oil-topped road to make my way home. I wasn’t the only onlooker though. There was quite a bit of traffic down the county road that night. I’m glad no one was hurt and at least the grass will come back much greener this spring.

Congratulations to Mr. Jimmy Harris (retired MGISD teacher) and wife Cynthia. They are grandparents once again. Their youngest daughter, Hilery (2003 MG Graduate), delivered their grandson on Sunday, Jan. 25. Little Harrison Cole Hill weighed 7.9 lbs and was 20 inches long. Hilery and husband, Jonathan, are very proud parents.

County Line Baptist Church is progressing nicely toward the construction of a new church building. They have now torn down the classrooms on the south side of the existing church.

MG Elementary and Junior High students did well recently at their academic UIL district meet which was held Dec. 9 and 10 at Ector and Savoy ISDs. Congratulations to the following: Gabe Hayden (4th Storytelling), Landon Burnett (6th Storytelling & 6th Spelling), Ethan George (6th Ready Writing), Kavan Smith (6th Number Sense & 5th Ready Writing), Riley Hasten (4th Oral Reading), Laynee Baker (1st Oral Reading), Kylie Melton (2nd Oral Reading), Gaby Idzi (3rd Number Sense), Jacob George (6th Dictionary Skills, 2nd Oral Reading, & 5th Ready Writing), Lainy Burnett (3rd Oral Reading), Lance Davis (1st Oral Reading), Isaiah Billingsley (3rd Ready Writing), Jorja Bessonett (3rd Dictionary Skills, 2nd Oral Reading & 1st Ready Writing), Jolee Fox (1st Oral Reading), Hannah Lewis (1st Impromptu Speaking, 5th Listening Skills-tie & 4th Ready Writing), Natalie White (5th Listening Skills-tie, 2nd Number Sense & 5th Ready Writing), Chandler Lee (2nd Science II-tie & 1st Social Studies), and Grant Earp (3rd Social Studies-tie). Also congratulations to the numbers sense team who took first place: William Sallee, Gaby Idzi, and Kavan Smith.

Happy Birthday this week to my uncle Johnny Darrow & Trudy (Dickens) Mayers on Jan. 26, Clint Stuckey on Jan. 29, and Dalton Darrow & Michelle Tipps on Jan. 30.
