Miller Grove News by Brandon Darrow

After the cold weather mid-week and the blustery day on Saturday, Sunday turned out to be very nice. I get spoiled to the sunshine and sixty degree weather and then winter rears its ugly head again and I’m thrown into the reality that it is still February and there is quite a bit of winter still at hand.

Friday night was Homecoming for Miller Grove High School. I ended up getting to see the end of the boys game and then watched as the court was announced. Congratulations to this year’s Homecoming King and Queen, William Clinton and Mika Massey. I’m very proud of all of our students who were Homecoming Count nominees.

After the winners were announced there was a brief ceremony for the Cross County team that now hold the title of State Champs. Each of the students who participated on the team received a State ring with the letters “MG” in green and gold in the center and the words “2014 State Champions” displayed around the top and bottom of the ring. Congratulations to the team: Riley Mitchell, Derek McCreight, William Clinton, Logan Miller, Aaron Smith, Brennan Green, and Trey Lester.
Congratulations also go out to two couples that were married this weekend. First, Shelly Ragan Crow married Jay Gaston of Emory on Saturday, Feb. 7. Their wedding was held at Miracle Faith Baptist Church in Emory. The ceremony and reception that followed were short but very nice. Bro. Robert Burns conducted the service. Shelly was dressed in a full-length gold dress and Jay wore jeans and a pink dress shirt. The bride was given by her son, Kyle, and father, James. Following the ceremony was a reception at the church with refreshments and punch. The couple honeymooned in Louisiana.

The second marriage this weekend was held at the Billboard House in Cumby. Kelli Claxton and Eric Urda were also married on Saturday. Kelli is the daughter of Lori Hall and granddaughter of C.L. “Butch” and Doris (Middleton) Hall.
Happy Birthday this week to Linda Bailey & Chad Hinton on Feb. 7; Larry McElvy, Lesia Forrest & Courtney Bunch on Feb. 8; Clay Smith & Brooke Burns on Feb. 9; Elaine Garmon & Nancy Edwards on Feb. 10; Brian Evans & Vanessa (Boss) Tipps on Feb. 11; Lori (Potts) McCullough on Feb. 12; Shanda Barron on Feb. 13; and Lisa Phillips, Bill Garrett, & Jim Bob Bishop on Feb. 14.

Happy 7th Anniversary to my brother and sister-in-law, Bradley and Madison Darrow, on Feb. 9. Jeremy and Jennfier Darrow will celebrate a decade of marriage this Friday, Feb. 13.

Saturday the Miller Grove Cemetery Trustees will have a meeting. Planning will begin on the 2015 Memorial Day Ceremonies which are slated for Saturday, May 2, this year.

Another committee meeting that is coming up will be held Sunday afternoon. The County Line School Historical Marker committee will be making plans to dedicate the historical marker that was awarded by the state last year.
