SSHS Teams and Individuals Qualify for Regional at UIL Academic District Meet
Sulphur Springs High School served as host site for UIL Academic District Competition this past Friday and Saturday. Four teams and numerous individuals qualified for regional competition for the Wildcats. Another team is likely to make it as a Wild Card team as the best second place team in the region.
The Accounting Team, coached by Paula Hass, made first place team to qualify. Felipe Alba got first place, Alex Pulmley was second, Daniel Soto was third. The Accounting Team is made up of Alba, Plumley, Soto and Caleb Yanez. In Calculator, coached by Gerald Grafton, Carissa Carter got third place to qualify for regional. Isaac Gutierrez was sixth.
The Calculator Team got second. In Computer Applications, coached by Matt Wilder, Brayden Fisher was fifth and Dakota Soles was sixth. In Computer Science coached by Matt Wilder, Brayden Fisher and Dakota Soles tied for first. Kevin Orozco got fourth and Blake Talmadge was fifth. The Computer Science Team of Fisher, Soles, Orozco and Talmadge got first place team and are headed for regional.
In Current Issues, coached by Madison Millsap, Brandon Hodges got second and James Draper was sixth. The Current Issues Team of Hodges, Draper, Dakota Soles and Bracken Sant earned first place team and qualified for regional. In Journalism Events, coached by Brandon Nelson, Angela Brown got first in Editorial Writing, Brown was also sixth in Feature Writing and third place in News Writing. Brown is going to regional in Editorial Writing and News Writing. In Literary Criticism, coached by Gail Herman, Carissa Carter was first, Lainey Whittle was second, Andrew Westlund was third and Matthew Harper was fourth. Wildcats UIL Academic Coordinator Gerald Grafton said the four Literary Criticism students have the top four scores in Class 5A in the State right now. The Literary Criticism Team of Carter, Whittle, Westlund and Harper were a first place team and qualified for regional. In Mathematics, coached by Gerald Grafton, Kendall Little was fifth. The Mathematics Team of Little, Payton Baugh, Ivory Liu and Kennedy Lee was a second place team.
In Number Sense, Andrew Westlund placed third and he is heading to regional. Also Bracken Sant was fifth, Kendall Little was sixth and the Number Sense team of Westlund, Sant, Little and Brayden Fisher was a second place team.
Two Ready Writers qualified fror regional: Annmarie Gunn was first and Breana Wooten was second.
In Science, coached by Steven Allemang, Peyton Baugh had the top biology score and qualified for regional. In Social Studies, coached by Madison Millsap, Brandon Hodges was third to qualify for regional and James Draper was sixth.
The Social Studies Team of Hodges, Draper, Bracken Sant and Tatum Williams was a second place team but may go to regional as a Wild Card Team.
Finally in Spelling and Vocabulary, coached by Gail Herman, Dawson Carpenter was second, Cameron Beard was third, Gisselle Garcia was fourth and Mariam Tran was fifth. The Spelling and Vocabulary Team of Carpenter, Beard, Garcia and Tran was a first place team and qualified for regional.
With some speech and debate events coming up Thursday in Pittsburg, the Wildcats are in first place in district with 436 points. Lindale is 18 points behind at 418. Mount Pleasant is in third place with 317 points.
