Two individuals filed candidacy Monday morning for a place on the May 2 Sulphur Springs City Council Election ballot.
Justin M. Brown had filed by 9:15 a.m. Jan. 27, as a candidate for Place 1 on the City Council.
At 9:50 a.m. Jan. 27, Jay W. Julian had also filed as a candidate for Place 1 on the City Council.
So far, Place 1 is the only place in which a contested race has developed. Five other places are up for election.
Places 1, 2, 3 and 5 are for the unexpected terms of council members who resigned in December. Places 6 and 7 were regularly slated to be on the May 2 ballot; both are for a full term on the council.
Additional candidates for the May 2 election include:
- Place 2 — Harold Nash Sr.
- Place 3 — Oscar Aguilar
- Place 5 — Ricardo Chavarria
- Place 6 — Doug Moore
- Place 7 — John A. Sellers
Candidate filing for Places 1-3 seats and Place 5-7 on the May 2 Sulphur Springs City Council Election ballot continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Feb. 14, at City Hall, 201 North Davis St. Residents should see City Secretary Gale Roberts for an application packet.
