Virginia Kate Washington, 88, slipped the surly bonds of Earth and became an angel on Saturday, July 23, 2022. All her life, she selflessly served others, especially her God, family, and community. She bravely fought a long illness, and now rests peacefully in the Kingdom of God.
Visitation will occur on Friday, July 29, 2022, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022, beginning at 11 a.m. at Morning Chapel Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482. A lunch reception will immediately follow the church services. A procession will leave the church at 2:30 p.m. burial and graveside farewells at Denton Baptist Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Texas.
Virginia was the sixth of eight children born to the marital union of Arthur Lee Dunlap and Bennie Ethel Dunlap (Bolden) in Mount Vernon, Texas. She married Troas Ben Washington, and to their union were born four children: Donald Wayne Washington (Yvonne), Jeanice Elaine Johnson, Barry Gene Washington, and Harry Dean Washington. She leaves behind grandchildren Jerome (Amy), LaTosha (Tyrone), Gregory, Everett, Tiffany, Donald II (Ashley), Brianna (Tony), and Travon; and 15 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brother, Reverend J.B. Dunlap (Doris) of Longview, Texas, sister-in-law Connie Mae Dunlap, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Aubrey and Lillian Washington, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mrs. Washington was pre-deceased by Troas Ben Washington, son Barry Gene Washington; her parents, Arthur and Bennie Dunlap; and her brothers Theotha, Arthur Verne, Curtis, Cappie D, Bennie Marshall, and Abner Earl; and grandson Noah Orlando Johnson (Jennifer).
She also leaves behind a host of friends and acquaintances, especially those she worked with for 20 years in the Sulphur Springs Independent School District Administration Office.She graduated from Mount Vernon High School and Madam C.J. Walker Beauty College in Dallas. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
