Cumby Traffic Stop Results In Arrest of Security Employee and Avalanche of Drugs
October 24, 2023 – A stop for a traffic violation went downhill quickly for two out-of-state residents as they passed through Cumby in the early hours of October 24th. Police noticed drug paraphernalia in plain sight in the vehicle and the driver of the Chevrolet pickup admitted to having marijuana in the car handing a jar of the leafy substance to the officer. This action prompted a probable cause search of the vehicle which turned into much more paperwork for the officers having to make an inventory of the illegal substances found in the vehicle.
The passenger in the vehicle was identified as Austin Monroe Miller, age 27 from Tennessee. A THC vape pen was found in the passenger seat as well and that pen contained a THC level greater than the amount allowed in the state of Texas. Miller, who lists his employment as “security” with a security company, was placed under arrest and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. A further search turned up an orange powdery substance which Miller admitted to be crushed up Adderall as well as a mushroom was found on his person. Both substances found resulted in additional charges for Austin Miller who remains in the Hopkins County Jail with charges of Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 >1 gram, Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2 >1 gram, as well as Prohibited Substance in a Correctional Facility, all felonies.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Zackery Glynn Barnett, age 27 also from Tennessee. Other drugs found in the car were attributed to Barnett’s ownership. Those include a wide variety of drugs including LSD, marijuana, mushrooms, ketamine, xanax as well as several other drugs and THC infused items. Barnett was arrested and transported to the Hopkins County Jail where he remains on the charges of Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 3 >28 grams, Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 >1gram>4 grams, and Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2 >1 gram. Barnett awaits his bond to be set on all charges.
