9:00 — 9:30 — Welcome & Coffee Social
9:30- 10:30 — Grasses of NE Texas — Identification, Biology, Distribution, Importance (Includes hands on and close up look at grass samples)
10:30 — 11:00 — Break 11:00 — 12:30 — Presentation on The Art of Seed Collecting — (Includes how to collect seeds in the field with tools/equipment demonstrated and actual seeds for practice)
12:30 — 2:00 — Lunch and Presentation: Introduction to the Native Prairies Association of Texas, the New Northeast Texas Chapter and the NPAT Prairies of Northeast Texas
2:00 — 4:00 – Collecting Seeds at various locations on Daphne Prairie – Seeds can be taken by participants for personal use and some seeds will be used in January for a Seed Cleaning & Packing Party for participants and members to be able to take for personal use also.
Join the newly forming Northeast Texas Native Prairies Association Chapter for a workshop at Daphne Prairie on Northeast Texas Grass Identification & Biology and the Art of Seed Collecting. This is a hands on workshop using native grasses and seeds collected at Daphne Prairie for this learning experience. Lunch will be provided and an introductory meeting for Northeast Texas Native Prairies Association will be held during lunch. After lunch we will collect seeds on site at the beautiful Daphne Prairie. Seeds will be properly stored and in January the Northeast Texas Chapter will host a seed cleaning and packing party so that seeds will be in perfect shape for planting by Northeast Texas Landowners on their own properties. Don’t miss this great opportunity to collect seeds from grasses and forbs at Daphne Prairie for use on your own properties.
Presenters: Pat and Glenn Merkord: Pat is Past President and Past Executive Director of Native Prairies Association of Texas and is currently Secretary of the Board of Native Prairies Assoc. of Texas and Glenn has been collecting and identifying grasses & seeds for many years and is a member of Houston NPAT. Pat holds a Master’s degree in Biology from Texas State University and Glenn holds a Master’s degree in Biology from Texas A&M, Kingsville. Together they own Bluestem Environmental Consultants working with landowners on Restoration and Wildlife Management Consulting.
