ERCOT Already Warning Texans About Winter Weather and the Power Grid

December 4, 2024 – Temps have finally cooled off across Texas and wintery weather is right around the corner. That means it’s also time for ERCOT’s warnings about winter weather and the possibility of power grid failures.

ERCOT’s own meteorologists are forecasting a risk of “extreme winter weather” possibly impacting Texas, and if that happens, chances of blackouts increase. Chris Coleman, ERCOT’s lead meteorologist, said recently that there is an “elevated” chance of severe or extreme winter weather this winter despite warmer weather patterns that have been predicted for January and February. He went on to say there is a 80% chance of power grid blackouts.

These current predictions are similar to the February 2021 storms. Those storms knocked out power for days for some in Texas and led to more than 200 people dying.
