Chicken Combs, Straight Up Or Floppy?
March 5, 2025 – A chicken’s comb serves as an important indicator of health, circulation, and overall condition. When a chicken’s comb falls over, it can be due to several factors, including genetics, age, environmental conditions, and egg-laying status.
Pendulous combs, or those that droop or flop to one side, are more commonly seen in laying hens. This is often because a hen’s comb enlarges and becomes more vibrant when she is in peak egg production due to increased blood flow. Over time, the weight of the enlarged comb can cause it to fall over, which is typically harmless and even considered normal in high-producing breeds such as Leghorns.
However, a fallen comb can sometimes indicate underlying health issues. Dehydration, malnutrition, parasites, or illness can cause a comb to become pale, shriveled, or limp. Extreme heat can also lead to drooping as chickens regulate body temperature through their combs.
While a pendulous comb is usually not a concern, sudden changes in comb size, texture, or color should be monitored. Ensuring proper nutrition, hydration, and overall health care can help maintain a healthy comb, supporting both the chicken’s well-being and egg-laying performance.
