‘Draggieland’ No Longer Welcome At Texas A&M
March 3, 2025 – The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents passed a resolution on Friday banning all drag performances from its 11 university campuses, effectively shutting down events like Draggieland, a student-organized drag show that had been held at Texas A&M University in College Station. The decision aligns with broader efforts in conservative states to restrict drag performances, particularly on public property and in educational settings.
Draggieland is an annual drag show where Texas drag performers compete for the title of “King/Queen of Draggieland.”
The resolution states that drag performances are “not consistent with the values of the Texas A&M System” and should not take place on campus facilities. Supporters of the ban argue that public universities should focus on academics rather than hosting events they believe to be controversial or inappropriate. However, critics view the move as an attack on LGBTQ+ expression and a violation of students’ rights to free speech and assembly.
Draggieland, which had been a recurring event at Texas A&M, was widely celebrated as a space for self-expression and inclusivity, with student organizations and local drag performers participating. Advocates for the event argue that the ban represents a step backward for diversity and campus culture. LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and civil rights organizations have already voiced opposition, claiming the policy unfairly targets a specific form of artistic expression.
Legal challenges could emerge as public universities are required to balance institutional policies with First Amendment protections. Opponents of the ban argue that restricting drag performances on public campuses could set a dangerous precedent for limiting other forms of artistic and cultural expression.
As the debate continues, students and faculty remain divided over the implications of the ban. While university officials stand by their decision, LGBTQ+ groups and allies are exploring alternative venues to keep Draggieland and similar events alive outside the Texas A&M campus.
