The Sulphur Springs High School One-Act Play, Maelstrom, about the life of Edgar Allan Poe finished in the top three at District competition at Longview Pine Tree Wednesday to advance to bi-district competition next month.
Three students also received awards for their performances.Liam Pollard, who played the role of Edgar Allan Poe, was named to the All-Star Cast. Sadie Evans and Carson McElwayne received honorable mention.
Stage Manager Hallie Farmer received the technical award. Farmer is new to theater according to Woodard.
High School Director of Theatre Arts Lesha Woodard said the troupe was excited about their performance inspite of the difficulties faced. Woodard called their performance the best yet. The Sulphur Springs Thespians were the eighth group to perform.
In the next round of competition, the locals will face the two teams, Hallsville and Longview, from this district and three additional teams including Corsicana, a perennial state competitor. The bi-district competition is April 9th in Longview.
At rehearsal, broken furniture, an injury to one of the actors, torn costume and being unable to get the lights to work in set up prior to the district competition were just a few of the problems faced.
There will be a public performance of Maelstrom coming up Sunday at 3 p.m. at the SSISD Auditorium.
