Deputies Arrested 2 Men On Felony Warrants, Escorted Third Man Into Jail For Warrant

Deputies arrested two men in Sulphur Springs on felony warrants, including one man released from jail less than a week ago, and escorted a third man into jail on a warrant, according to arrest reports.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Justin Wilkerson and Sgt. Scott Davis were made aware of a warrant for a 31-year-old Dike man’s arrest. They found Daniel Ray Penson sitting in his vehicle in a Gilmer Street business parking lot. The sheriff’s officers contacted Penson, confirmed the warrant, took him into custody at 1:14 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2021, and took him to jail. The Dike, TX man was held on the Austin Parole Board warrant for violation of parole.

Tuesday marked the second time Penson has been jailed locally in less than a week. He was booked into Hopkins County jail early Friday morning, May 14, 2021, for third or more driving while intoxicated offense. HCSO Deputy Aaron Chaney contacted him just before midnight Thursday, May 13, on FM 69 north regarding a reckless driving complaint called in on the truck he had been driving. Penson appeared nervous and wouldn’t make eye contact with the deputy, who observed an open container in the pickup console. When asked Penson allegedly claimed to have only consumed the one alcoholic beverage. Alcohol was smelled on Penson, who swayed during horizontal gaze nystagmus tests on which he displayed all six possible clues of intoxication. He agreed to a blood test, which was taken at the hospital. He was booked into jail early May 14 on the felony DWI charge, Chaney alleged in arrest reports. He was released from jail later may 14 on a $15,000 bond on the third or more drunk driving charge.

Devin Ray Humphries turned himself in at Hopkins County Law Enforcement Center at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2021, on a felony warrant. HCSO Sgt. Scott Davis escorted the 35-year-old Campbell man into the county jail, where he was booked at 11:37 p.m. on the warrant for violation of probation on a tampering with evidence charge; the offense is alleged to have occurred on Aug. 30, 2018.

Jail reports show Humphries also spent Jan. 14-March 1, 2019, in the county jail following his arrest on a warrant for violating probation on the tampering with evidence charge. He remained in custody on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, on the latest warrant accusing him of violating probation on the tampering with evidence charge.

HCSO Deputies Justin Wilkerson and Aaron Chaney and Sgt. Scott Davis were made aware of three warrants issued for a 21-year-old Sulphur Springs man’s arrest Tuesday. Deputies traveled to the man’s Fuller Street address, where he was seen outside. Deputies took Jamar Matthew Gooden into custody just before 7 p.m. May 18, 2021. Gooden was booked into Hopkins County jail just before 8 p.m. Tuesday for surety off bond on the three April 2021 charges.

Gooden was jailed early Friday morning, April 16, 2021, on an unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group1 controlled substance charges on April 16, 2021, after a firearm was found beside a vaporizer cartridge with THC inside in the back floorboard of the vehicle he was driving during a Jefferson Street traffic stop. He was released from custody later April 16, 2021, on a $10,000 on the firearm charge and a $5,000 bond on the controlled substance charges, Deputy Chaney alleged in the April 16 arrest reports.

The 21-year-old returned to Hopkins County jail Sunday night, April 19, 2021, on a possession of 4 grams or more but less than 400 grams of a Penalty Group 2 controlled substance in a drug-free zone charge, after Sulphur Springs police stopped him on Freeman Street for a traffic violation in the same van he was driving when deputies stopped him three days before. Police reported finding  finding miscellaneous drug paraphernalia on Gooden when he patted the 21-year-old down. Officers also alleged finding a cartridge containing a light brown wax the officer suspected and Gooden confirmed to be THC oil. Gooden remained in Hopkins County jail until April 26, on the possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone charge.

Gooden remained in Wednesday, May 19, 2021, on for surety off bond on all three of the April 2021 charges.
