Mary Lou Akins passed away January 27, 2022 at the age of 97. She was born April 26, 1924 to Clyde and Lovell Ferguson in Miller Grove, Texas. After her mother passed away when she was three years old, her father married Lera Darrow who lovingly helped raise her. She had a loving, close relationship with all of
her brothers and sisters, Jack, Vallie, Dorothy Nell, Johnnie, Ruby and Bonnie.
She graduated from Miller Grove School in 1941 where she was voted most beautiful of her senior class. On November 25, 1943 she married the love of her life, H.C. Akins. They were happily married for 69 years. As a young married couple they moved to Oak Cliff where they raised their two daughters Linda and Carol and were very active in the Brandon Avenue Methodist Church. For a time she worked at Sears & Roebuck Fashion Center. In 1972 they decided to return to their true home, Miller Grove where they were members of Miller Grove United Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband H.C., her daughter Linda, brothers Jack and Johnnie and sisters Vallie and Dorothy Nell.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Dunn and her husband Billy; sisters Ruby Long and Bonnie (George) Callan; grandchildren Michael (Tammy) Anthony, Kellie (Tony) Rowbotham, Dena (John) Brashear and Kim
(Robert) Adams; great-grandchildren Dustyn (Amy) Anthony, Chad (Tanya) Anthony, Garrett Anthony, Steve (Norma) Brashear, Matt (Krystal) Brashear, Kayla Brashear, Kaytlin (Tanner) McGill, Coltin Rowbotham and Carson Adams along with greatgreat-grandchildren, Gracyn, Lily, Luke, Levi, Brody,
Mikayla, Landrie, Maddox, Liam, Nigel and Henry.
Services will be held at Miller Grove United Methodist Church Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with a viewing starting at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Miller Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Anthony, Dustyn Anthony, Chad Anthony, Coltin Rowbotham, John Brashear and Carson Adams. She touched the hearts of everyone in the community, stepping up to care for others in need. She also was lovingly referred to by many as “Nanny” or “Pie.”
She lived an amazing 97 years, and her presence will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Miller Grove United Methodist Church or Miller Grove Cemetery c/o Carol Dunn, 14480
