Ladies age 60 and older are being sought for participation in the 2022 Ms. Hopkins County Senior Classic Pageant Saturday evening, June 4, 2022, at the Civic Center.
“It is a fun and memorable evening. You will make new friends and have the time of your life,” said Karon Weatherman, pageant coordinator. “If you know a lady that would be interested please encourage her to enter.”
The pageant provides ladies with an opportunity to step out of their comfort zone, take a chance on something fun and really shine.
The pageant consists of a talent contest which can consist of anything from dancing, singing, playing the piano, comedy, making something, art, a reading, reciting of a poem, Bible teaching or verses, comedy, a theatrical enactment or anything the lady is good at and can think up.
Each lady is also asked to submit a brief statement on her philosophy of life, to be read along with a brief biography as she takes her turn walking the “stage” in her best dress or pants suit. Each lady will also draw a slip from a hat or bowl with question which she will then answer; many questions are typically whimsical such as what would you do if you won a million dollars, what super hero would you be, if you were given one wish, favorite memory and so on.
Just to be sure ladies know exactly what to expect a contestants tea is typically held the day before the pageant. Participants typically have a lot of fun, make new friends while rehearsing for their big debut and enjoy showing the community just how vibrant and fantastic women age 60 and older are.
“Ladies 60-plus, I am worried that we are not going to be able to have a pageant this year unless more ladies tell me that they are going to be in it. I only have five ladies so far that told me that they would enter. Please let me know ASAP if you are going to enter this year,” said Weatherman said. “I need at least 6 to have a good pageant.”
So far, the five registered participants include Sharon Baker, Linda Pickle Hill, Valerie Ross, Jan Massey and Marjean Allenm, who enjoy the pageant so much they’ve each participated before and returned to try their hand at the title again.
“Call me and talk to me if you have any questions or reservations about entering,” Weatherman said. I really need to start ordering my sashes and tiaras. I won’t order until I have at least six ladies. This pageant is too important to let die because of lack of participation.”

Community members are encouraged to mark 6 p.m. June 4 on their calendars to attend the pageant and show support for these ladies. Admission is free, and there are typically cookies and punch or lemonade afterwards. While judges are finalizing their score sheets and an auditor tabulates them to determine the winners.
The queen receives a trophy, crown, flowers a sash to wear to community events and a certificate. Most others receive at least one certificate for things they excel at, such as best dressed, best philosophy of life, best interview and Ms. Congeniality. The winner earns the right to advance to the state Ms. Senior Pageant, to compete for the Texas Ms. Senior title. The reining queen, Ms. Hopkins County Senior Classic 2021, is Wilma Thompson. She and other past winners will perform during the contest while the judges complete their score sheets and the auditor determines the top points recipient.
