“Cooking Well with Diabetes” Series Coming Soon

If you or someone you know has diabetes, preparing healthy meals doesn’t have to be a challenge. As a matter of fact, we ALL need to make more nutritious choices. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service provides a great series called “Cooking Well with Diabetes”, which can make meal preparation at home more nutritious, as well as delicious!

The “Cooking Well with Diabetes” (CWWD) summer series is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 12, 14, 19, and 21, at 1:30 p.m., to be held at the Hopkins County Extension Office, 1200-B W. Houston Street, Sulphur Springs. This 4-lesson series provides useful information, as well as cooking demonstrations and sampling. See first-hand how simple and tasty the recipes are!

Carbohydrate Foods” will cover foods that are high and low in carbohydrates, and recommendations for carbohydrate intake. Participants will be able to recognize foods that raise their blood glucose the most, and which foods have little effect on blood glucose.

“Making Recipes with Fat Better for You” will provide information on healthy cooking methods, making wise selections of food that are typically higher in fat, and altering recipes. Participants will take a look at the various cooking methods and distinguish healthy choices on menus.

Double-Pleasure Side Dishes – Reducing Sodium and Increasing Fiber” will cover ways to modify side dish recipes, such as vegetables and salads, to bring out the best flavor while decreasing sodium.

“Celebrating Sensibly with Diabetes” is one of my favorite sessions! We’ll discuss ways to avoid those rich, holiday food temptations, while still enjoying healthier holiday and party choices.

Some of the foods demonstrated and/or sampled will be Black Bean and Cilantro Spread, Peach Cobbler, Blueberry Banana Loaf, Turkey Broccoli Casserole, Oven Fried Chicken, Seafood Pasta Salad, Double Cornbread, Waldorf Salad, Strawberry Pineapple Cups, Layered Fruit Salad, Real Men Eat this Quiche, and Diabetic Pecan Pie.

Cost of the series is $25, payable at the first session, which covers materials and notebook, samples, door prizes, and supplementary publications. Seating is limited to 25. Please contact our office at 903-885-3443 to reserve a seat. Leave your name, mailing address, and phone number.

Twogether in Texas Marriage Education Workshop

This will probably be the final workshop for 2014, so if you know of a couple who is engaged to be married, please pass this information on to them! This workshop equips couples in the areas of marriage expectations, communication, conflict resolution, money management, and goals & dreams. Upon completion of the workshop, couples will receive a certificate to save $60 when applying for a marriage license. The best news is that the workshop is free! However, couples DO need to call to reserve a seat so I can make adequate preparations.

The date is Saturday, August 16, 8:30 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m., at the Extension Office, 1200-B W. Houston Street, Sulphur Springs. Coffee, water, and refreshments will be provided, and we will dismiss for lunch, resuming afterward. Call the Extension Office at 903-885-3443 to sign up. Please leave name and phone number.
