Gaylon Dale Hume, age 77, of Sulphur Bluff, Texas, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
Visitation will be on Monday, January 2, 2023, at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. and the funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home with Paul Newby officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Austin Kunkle, Rylie Kunkle, Blake Hume, Jeff Stevens, Jason Brown, and Jared Smith. Honorary pallbearer will be Joseph Hume. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.
Gaylon was born on September 20, 1945, in the Needmore community to Homer H and Orena Maude (Godfrey) Hume. He attended the Sulphur Bluff School and he graduated in 1963. Gaylon then attended East Texas State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1967. Shortly after, he served his country in Vietnam with the United States Army from 1967-1970. Gaylon worked for the Texas Highway Department in Franklin County and, then, worked at Texas Utilities. He retired to spoil the grandkids and raise cattle. Gaylon bought the Sulphur Bluff store and enjoyed gossiping with the community for 3 years. He was lovingly called granddaddy by all the high school kids.
Gaylon married Brenda Kay Sanders in 1970 and they had 3 children. He later married Alva Nell Rushing in 1994.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alva Hume; and sister, Juanita Nelson.
Gaylon is survived by his children and their spouses, Jennifer and Bryan Kunkle of Plano, Texas, son, Toby and Vicki Hume of Sulphur Bluff, Texas and son, Koby and Mallory Hume of Sulphur Bluff, Texas; Grandchildren, Austin Kunkle, Rylie Kunkle, Kaylon Hume, Blake Hume, Mayzie Fouse, and Joseph Hume; Nephew, Michael Singleton; and niece, Marie Singleton.
