Keller ISD Joins Movement to Ban Cell Phones in Schools
July 30, 2024 – The Keller ISD recently voted to ban cell phone use during school hours, and took the additional step to outline additional penalties for repeat offenders.
Student violate the new cell phone policy, could face detention, Saturday school or the loss of exemption from semester finals.
This move in response to frustrations teachers and administrators have had trying to address challenges with students that are on their phones rather than learning.
The policy allows for students to have devices but they must be powered off and in a bag, purse or backpack during the school day. This includes any Bluetooth devices, such as headphones and earbuds, except for teacher-approved purposes.
Consequences for the first offense include:
- Confiscation of phone
- Parent contact
- Detention
The consequences will increase in severity upon second or third offenses. These consequences include Saturday school, in-school suspension and loss of exemption from semester finals.
Staff members can confiscate any devices that are used without permission.
