CHRISTUS Closing Santa Rosa Hospital This April
February 24, 2025 – CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System has announced the closure of its Medical Center hospital in San Antonio, TX, effective April 25, 2025. This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of the hospital’s operations and the evolving healthcare needs of the community. The closure aims to ensure a seamless transition of patient care to other CHRISTUS facilities, maintaining the quality and accessibility of healthcare services in the region.
To accommodate patients previously served by the Medical Center location, CHRISTUS has invested approximately $300 million over the past five years in expanding its facilities. Notably, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills, located 13 miles from the Medical Center, is set to open a new patient tower this spring, effectively replacing the inpatient beds of the closing hospital. Additionally, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Alamo Heights, nine miles away, is enhancing its services with advanced surgical equipment, a critical care unit, and an expanded emergency department.
The Medical Center hospital, established in 1986, has been a cornerstone of healthcare in San Antonio, offering a range of specialty services, including cardiac care, orthopedic surgery, and transplant services. Despite its rich history, the decision to close the facility reflects CHRISTUS’s commitment to adapting to the changing healthcare landscape and optimizing resources to better serve the community.
This move is not unprecedented for CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System. In 2012, the organization transformed its downtown facility into a dedicated children’s hospital, reallocating resources to meet specific community health needs. Similarly, the current consolidation strategy focuses on enhancing patient care by concentrating services in updated, strategically located facilities.
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System serves a population of 2.3 million across Bexar, Comal, and Hays counties. The organization remains committed to its mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, ensuring that the community continues to receive comprehensive and compassionate healthcare services through its remaining hospitals and expanded facilities.
