This week I’m back to writing some MG news after a two week absence. It’s a busy time of year and a lot has been going on in the community lately.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I had one with my mother’s side of the family the Sunday before Thanksgiving. There weren’t as many there as usually but I think everyone there had an enjoyable time and we all left full of good food.
Sympathy goes out to the family of Bobby McDonald. He will be missed by so many in Hopkins County. I know that all of us in Miller Grove appreciated the coverage he would give our students and all of the activities that we had at the school each year. Bobby was always there with his camera ready to snap a shot or two and jotting down a quote from the locals before having to run across the county to some other function.
Well folks, as the legendary Bill Monroe once said, “Christmas Time’s a Coming” and it’ll be here in about two weeks! I am not ready at all. And, for those of you who are too young to know who Bill Monroe is, I’ll suggest that you Google his name and you can read up on the “Father of Bluegrass” as he was named.
Work on the new elementary addition has slowed down some. Since the last time I walked through the building I noticed that the tile in the restrooms had been installed and there had been some painting going on. Hopefully the teachers and students will be able to occupy the addition before Spring Break.
County Line Baptist Church will be celebrating the completion of their new church building with a special dedication scheduled for Dec. 11, from 2-4 pm. The last time I passed they had poured concrete for extra parking along the south side of the building and a wainscot of stone was being installed around the outside of the building. A few weeks ago three crosses were affixed to the outside of the front of the building. It’s coming together nicely and I know all of their membership is really enjoying the new building.
Miller Grove High School’s National Honor Society will be collecting food until Dec. 9 for a food drive. The class that turns in the most canned goods will win a pizza party.
I was proud to hear that my little niece, Savanna Darrow, was honored as being Student of the Month at Travis Elementary School in Sulphur Springs.
A special belated birthday wish goes out to my cousin, Faye Tipps, that celebrated a birthday on Nov. 29. I couldn’t keep from mentioning her since she is an avid MG News Column reader. Another belated birthday wish for the same date, Nov. 29, goes out to our rural mail carrier – Carolyn (Garmon) Burns. I hope both of these young ladies had a great birthday!
Happy Birthday to Jeremy Darrow, Tyler Lennon & James Oler on Dec. 5; Renee (Flecker) Whillock on Dec. 6; Toby Reeves, Ryan Dougan, David May & Cletis Millsap on Dec. 9; and Joni Burns on Dec. 10.
As you travel the highways and byways don’t forget that all roads lead back home and back to Miller Grove. Please send me any newsworthy information. My email address is [email protected].
