The Wildcats’ cross country team finished first and the Lady Cats were fifth at the Commerce Tiger Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday (August 25) at Commerce High School.
The Wildcats were led by Landon Thornton who won the boys’ 5K race with a time of 16:57. Christian Palomino finished fourth at 18:07. Eli Sellers was seventh with a time of 18:23. Nabian Ramirez was eighteenth at 19:09. Jose Mejia was nineteenth with a time of 19:15. Abdiel Ramirez finished twenty-fifth at 20:06. Rhett Reid was twenty-ninth at 20:12.
The Lady Cats were led by Sydney Washburn who had a time of 13:33 in the 3200-meter race. Sophomore Landrie McKinney was twenty-third at 14:36. Kaitlyn Ferrell finished thiry-second at 14:53. Ashley Noe was fifty-sixth at 15:37. Maurie Flecker was sixty-second at 15:46. Jessica Yanez was sixty-third at 15:48. Joline Carpenter was sixty-fourth at 15:51.
Cross Country Coach Ross Hicks said many of his runners got off to a blazing start only to fall back into the pack later. He said the runners will need to learn to pace themselves. Coach Hicks said Thornton ran a great race and led throughout. He said Palomino and Sellers had good races. Coach Hicks credited Washburn with getting off to a strong start. He said McKinney did well.
The Wildcats and Lady Cats will run next at the Wylie East Raider XC Invitational at Founder’s Park in Wylie next Saturday.
