Many have never heard of pruning tomato plants except for those pesky secondary branches and the central stem top a month before frost to force the plant into ripening the final fruit. Now, we’re learning
there’s more to do.
For tomato plants, is pruning necessary? For determinate plants, the answer is usually no. They produce a crop and are finished by late July to early August, so why bother. For determinate plants (grow until killed by freeze), pruning has few advantages. Getting rid of branches growing at a 45° angle from the base of horizontal branches is really just a waste of time.
Topping the central stem for both determinate & indeterminant at around 4’, however, strengthens the central stem and facilitates more branches, and the branches are where the fruits are produced. It also stimulates the branches to produce more flowers. Improved branches produce more fruit overall. Topping in Late October forces the plant to put more energy into ripening the final fruits.
There are basically no downsides to topping/pruning indeterminate tomato plants. Topping a determinate plant, however, may cause the main stem to struggle and limit the total harvest. Again, why bother. Once the plant is at least one’ tall, begin pruning the bottom branches to allow more air and light to reach what will be the lowest branches. By the time the plant is 3’ tall, the lowest branch should be at least 12” above ground level. Plant branch pruning (trimming) provides healthy, strong plants that avoid branches with fruit on them snapping, damaging or destroying the plant.
Pruning pepper plants allows more light and air to reach the plant. Prune branches to 6” above ground for small varieties and 12” for larger plants. Too much foliage at the bottom keeps needed oxygen from reaching the plant.
Cumby Police Stop Speeding Vehicle: Find Drugs
June 26, 2023 – Cumby Police stopped a Range Rover near mile marker 111, Sunday afternoon. The vehicle was travelling eastbound at 94 miles per hour.
The driver, BRIAN STEWART ROBERTSON age 48 of Grapevine TX, was found to be out-on-bond with restrictions. Those restrictions forbid him to be in contact with a certain woman and child. A woman and child were seen inside the vehicle. Robertson was asked to exit the vehicle. As he did, he stuffed something between the front two seats. When questioned about what he had stashed there, he gave several excuses and was evasive and deceptive.
Police asked for permission to search the vehicle and Roberson consented. Between the seats police found a small bag containing cocaine.
Robertson was restrained and placed in a patrol car. His bond was set at $30,000 and he is charged with:

Bakaj’s bond was set at $10,000. She is charged with:

Due to the proximity of a park, their charges were enhanced. Both Robertson and Bakaj were transported to Hopkins County Jail without incident. The Range Rover was impounded.

Three Arrested After Drugs Found in Their Car
June 24, 2023 – A late evening drive, and a minor traffic violation on Cranford Ave in Sulphur Springs, lead to three arrests for illegal narcotics Friday.
After Sulphur Springs Police saw a minor traffic violation, a traffic stop was initiated. Police made contact with the three occupants of the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. The driver, Brian Lynn Matthews age 44 of Precinct 4, appeared nervous when contacted. Matthews was asked to exit the vehicle and he complied. When asked if he was nervous, he said he wasn’t. When asked if there was anything illegal in his vehicle, he said there wasn’t. When asked if his vehicle could be searched, he granted permission.
With everyone out of the vehicle, a search of the vehicle began. A glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine was found along with a bag containing approximately 30 grams of methamphetamine.
When Matthews heard this news, he attempted to flee the scene. After a brief chase through yards nearby, Matthews was assisted back to the scene.
Interviews with the accused continued. The male occupants wished to speak with police, but the female occupant did not. None of the three claimed to know anything about the meth or the pipe.

Doris Rosamarie Russell, unemployed age 34 of Emory, TX, was charged with:

At the time of her arrest, Russell was on probation. There was also a warrant for her arrest for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility. This is not the first time Russell has been in Hopkins County Jail. In 2021 she was arrested after her sewing kit was found to contain methamphetamine. See that story here.

Failure to Stop Lands Two in Jail
June 15, 2023 – A pair of Texas residents landed in jail after a late night failure to stop at Main Street intersection.
Hopkins County Sheriff’s Deputies observed an older Dodge Ram Pickup make an incorrect stop at the intersection of Magnolia and Main Street. That intersection is just a few block east of Downtown Sulphur Springs.
A traffic stop was initiated. When deputies made contact, they noticed the two occupants where evasive, withheld information, and continuously looked around the inside of the vehicle. The driver, JOHNNY LEE GIVAN of Mabank, TX, gave consent to search the vehicle.
A glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine was found hidden inside a lunch box. A baggy containing methamphetamine was found under the driver’s side seat cover. Neither Givan or the passenger, SHELLY RENEE TOWNSEND age 57 of Gun Barrel City, claimed ownership of the contraband.
The incident occurred in a drug-free-zone. Both were arrested and transport to Hopkins County Jail without incident. The pickup was impounded. Both were charged with:

Early Morning Check of Cumby Rest Stop Yields Arrest
June 25, 2023 – Cumby Police routinely patrol the rest stop on I-30 as it is inside Cumby city limits. An early morning check resulted in the arrest of a South Carolina woman.
At around 1:30 AM, Cumby police drove through the east bound rest area on I-30. They noticed a vehicle exited the area, which is a drug-free zone, immediately after they entered. A record check of the black Ford Freestyle SUV showed expired registration.
A traffic stop was initiated on I-30 near mile marker 119. Contact was make with the sole occupant, 51 year-old KAREN RENEE ZAJICEK.
While police spoke with Zajicek, they noticed several alcoholic beverage containers within reach of the driver. Zajicek allegedly admitted to marihuana being in the vehicle. A probably causes search revealed 1 gm of marihuana, 5 grams THC gummies, and just over 5 grams of methamphetamine. She was arrested and transported to Hopkins County Jail and her Ford was impounded.

Paris — Here’s a look at work planned in the district for the week starting June 26, 2023. These schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure or other unforeseen issues. Motorists are advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.
Sherman Area (Fannin, Grayson Counties)

US 75, Grayson County: from FM 1417 to SH 91 (Texoma Parkway). Watch for shoulder closures and lane shifts on the northbound and southbound US 75 main lanes between SH 91 and FM 1417 as crews work on building new main lanes, bridges, and retaining walls. Watch for lane closures on the frontage roads between FM 1417 and SH 91. A reduced speed limit of 60 mph on the US 75 mainlanes has been set on the mainlanes for this construction project.
Mainlane traffic has been switched from the old mainlanes to the existing frontage roads to allow for construction of the new mainlanes and bridges between South Travis Street and Center Street. During this operation, northbound US 75 mainlane traffic will shift onto the existing frontage road approximately one-half mile north of South Travis Street and transition back to the existing mainlanes at Middleton Street. Southbound US 75 mainlane traffic will shift onto the existing frontage road approximately one-half mile north of Park Avenue and transition back to existing mainlanes approximately one-half mile north of South Travis Street. This operation will allow for reconstruction of the proposed US 75 mainlanes and bridges at Post Oak Creek. During this phase, US 75 frontage road traffic will be reduced to a single travel lane while US 75 mainlane traffic will maintain two travel lanes. Both mainlane and frontage road traffic will be separated by concrete barriers.
All eastbound and westbound lanes of Park Avenue under US 75 are closed to traffic. This closure is necessary to allow for construction of the new overpass at Park Avenue. To detour, eastbound Park Avenue traffic will turn right on the southbound US 75 frontage road, turn left on South Travis Street, and turn left on the northbound US 75 frontage road to return to Park Avenue. Westbound traffic will turn right on the northbound US 75 frontage road, turn left on Center Street, and turn left on the southbound US 75 frontage road to return to Park Avenue.
The westbound US 82 exit ramp to US 75 has been permanently closed to traffic. All traffic wishing to access US 75 will take the existing Loy Lake Road exit, which will serve as the new permanent US 75 exit, too.
The eastbound entrance ramp to US 82 at the US 75 intersection is closed to traffic. This ramp serves as the entrance ramp to eastbound US 82 at US 75. This closure is needed to complete the construction of the US 82 eastbound frontage road and new entrance ramp. Motorists are advised to use the eastbound frontage road and continue east through the Loy Lake intersection and use the eastbound entrance ramp from Loy Lake Road to gain access to US 82.
Lamar Street and Houston Street under US 75 are closed to through traffic with detour signs in place to guide motorists around these intersections.
Eastbound Lamar Street traffic will turn right on the southbound US 75 frontage road, turn left on Center Street, and turn left on the northbound US 75 frontage road to return to eastbound Lamar Street. Video animation of this detour can be seen at the following link.

The ultimate roadway will be a four-lane divided section with turn lanes. A reduced speed limit of 45 mph has been set for this construction project.
FM 901, Grayson County: North of Sadler at Mineral Creek. Watch for daytime lanes closures while crews perform bridge maintenance. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.
The annual seal coat contract to place a chip and seal treatment on the roadways in Grayson County has begun. The following roadways will receive a seal coat: FM 121 from US 377 to SH 289; SH 289 from FM 120 to SH 56; and SH 5 from US 75 to Redden Road. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.
SH 11, Grayson County: from FM 697 in Sherman to US 69 in Whitewright. Work on the pavement overlay project has begun. Watch for daytime lane closures as workers repair culverts, mill and then overlay the roadway with a hot-mix surface. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.
Park Road 20 in Eisenhower State Park, Grayson County. Watch for daytime lane closures within Eisenhower State Park as workers perform base repairs on the roadway and then overlay the roadway with a hot-mix surface. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.
US 82, Grayson County: from the Cooke County line to FM 131 in Sherman. Watch for lane closures as workers replace the bridge railing and guardrail approaches at each bridge structure and install median barrier. During construction, the bridge location will be reduced to one lane while crews replace the bridge railing. Currently the contractor is working on the westbound US 82 lanes at Harris Creek and on the eastbound lanes at Post Oak Creek.
South Travis Street, Grayson County: in Sherman at Post Oak Creek. Construction is underway for the replacement of the South Travis Street bridge over Post Oak Creek. During construction, the bridge will be reduced to one lane with traffic signals controlling traffic through the project, while the new bridge is built in phases.
US 75 full depth concrete repair, Grayson County: Crews will be working on US 75 each week from Sunday night through Friday morning during the overnight period. Lane closures will be present at night for crews to replace failed concrete sections. Lane closures will begin at 7:30 p.m. each night and should be reopened to traffic by 6 a.m. This work will extend from the Collin-Grayson County line to the Oklahoma State line.
FS 121 (Grayson Parkway), Grayson County: from the Collin County line to FM 121. Construction is ongoing on this new-location roadway which is west of SH 289 approximately four miles. The new roadway will be two lanes with shoulders and will be an extension of the frontage road of the Dallas North Tollway. Local traffic on CR 60 (Marilee Road) and Stiff Chapel Road should expect occasional road work at those intersections, with flaggers present to control traffic. Work on FM 121 at the FS 121 intersection (formerly Scharff Road intersection) is ongoing as crews work to widen the pavement to add turn lanes. Motorists on FM 121 should expect lane shifts while crews widen the pavement and install a culvert.
US 75 debris pickup, Grayson County: from Collin County line to Oklahoma State line. Watch for mobile lane closures as workers pick up debris from the roadway every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday during the nighttime.
SH 5, Grayson County: from US 75 to SH 5. Watch for daytime lane closures as maintenance crews blade level the roadway with hotmix. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

SH 34, Fannin County: from FM 64 to FM 1550. Watch for traffic shifts and traffic-signal-controlled lane closures as workers build the bridge approaches for the new SH 34 roadway at the future Lake Ralph Hall.
FM 1550, Fannin County: from SH 34 to CR 3544. Watch for daytime lane closures as crews work on building the connection of the realigned FM 1550 to the existing roadway. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers and pilot cars direct traffic through the work zone.

Milling and paving operations have finished begun. The contractor has completed performing work at night in downtown Greenville near the square due to ongoing city infrastructure repairs. Permanent striping will begin in areas that are available. Installation of concrete mow strip and full depth repairs will continue. Concrete and curb and gutter repairs are ongoing. Cleaning and sweeping operations are also being performed. Please be aware of workers and watch for work zones when traveling in this area.
FM 2946, Rains County (From FM 515 to FM 2795): Contractors have set barricades and work zone traffic signs. The contractor is performing cross culvert work and culvert extensions at various locations on the project. The contractor has worked on driveway and driveway pipe. Subgrade work for the first three miles is ongoing. Please be aware of workers and watch for work zones when traveling in this area.
FM 2649, Hunt County (From I-30 to FM 1567): Contractors have set barricades and work zone traffic signs. The contractor has begun placing driveway safety ends and concrete pipe. Cross culvert work, preparation of the right of way, reworking the roadway, widening and cement treatment to the subgrade, and reworking the roadway base material is ongoing. Please be aware of workers and watch for work zones when traveling in this area.
CR 1032, 1031 and 2132 bridge replacement project, Hunt County. The contractor has set barricades and advance warning signs. The contractor has reopened the CR 1032 and CR 2132 bridge. The contractor will begin work on CR 1031 once conditions in the area are dry, by preparing the right of way and placing the detour. Please be aware of workers and watch for work zones when traveling in this area.
I-30, Hunt County: Interchange Improvements: The contractor has set barricades and advance warning signs. Excavation work for detours on both frontage roads has begun and some temporary pavement will begin this week. Temporary drainage for the frontage roads on- and off-ramps will begin soon. The frontage road speed reduction signs and low profile traffic barrier on frontage roads have been installed. I-30 frontage roads are being converted to a one-way configuration. Please be aware of workers and watch for work zones when traveling in this area.
SH 276, Hunt County: from FM 36 to SH 34 (Quinlan Bypass). The contractor was able to open west- and eastbound lanes of Business SH 276 and is working on the final paving left to tie in the project with the proposed bypass. Asphalt work to finish the north and south ends of Spur 264 mill and overlay with permanent striping will begin soon. The contractor will be processing flex base, cement treat, prime, OCST and asphalt on flex base west tie-in soon. Please be aware of lane closures and changes to current traffic configuration and watch for work zones and workers when traveling in this area.
SH 66, Hunt County: SH 66 at FM 1570, SH 34 at FM 1570. The contractor has installed signal poles and signal lights at SH 34, and FM 1570 and SH 66 intersections. Traffic signals at the following intersections have gone live: SH 34 at FM 1903, SH 34 at FM 1570, and SH 66 at FM 1570. Final punch list work has begun. Please be careful when traveling in these areas, watch out for workers and maintain a safe distance from work crews.
Maintenance crews for both Hunt and Rains County will be performing various sign and mailbox installations on various roads. Rains County crews will be performing safety mowing on SH 276. Both Hunt and Rains County crews have finished seal coating on FM 1563 near Fairlie and FM 2194 near Merit in Hunt County. Hunt and Rains County crews will began seal coating on FM 2947 and FM 3299. Please be careful when traveling in these areas, watch out for workers and maintain a safe distance from work crews.

Hopkins County United Way Gives More
June 23, 2023 – The Hopkins County United Way had a surplus of donations this year thanks to all the generous donations. Earlier this year, the initial disbursements were made to worthy organization across Hopkins County. The remaining funds were distributed this morning. This second round totaled nearly $60,000.

Stellantis Issues recall of Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee
Stellantis has issued a recall for about 81,000 Jeep and Ram vehicles because their engines can repeatedly stall due to a metalwork defect. The problem affects two models, but only those equipped with 3.0-liter diesel engines.

The problem, the company says, is that magnetic material can delaminate from the surface of a tone wheel — a wheel with teeth mounted around the flywheel. The crank position sensor uses the tone wheel as a reference point to know when the engine control unit (ECU) starts the combustion process. Without a working tone wheel, the crankshaft position sensor can’t function, which makes the engine lose its timing.
That can make the engine stall repeatedly and even fail to restart.
The company says it knows of no accidents caused by the issue but has received at least 611 warranty claims that were related to it.
The solution does not involve a new tone wheel. Instead, Stellantis says, dealers will “update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion by reading the camshaft position signal if crankshaft position signal is lost.”
Recall repairs are always free.

Heat Stroke
What to look for
- High body temperature (103 Degrees F or higher)
- hot, red, dry, or damp skin
- Fast, strong pulse
- Headache
- Nausea
- Confusion
- Losing consciousness
What to Do
- Call 911 right away as heat stroke is a medical emergency
- Move the person to a cooler place
- Help lower the person’s temperature with cool cloths or a cool bath
- Do not give the person anything to drink
Heat Exhaustion
What to look for
- Heavy sweating
- Cold, pale, and clammy skin
- Fast, weak pulse
- Nausea or vomiting
- Muscle cramps
- Tiredness or weakness
- Dizziness
- Fainting
What to do
- Move to a cool place
- Loosen your clothes
- Put cool, wet cloths on your body or take a cool bath
- Sip water
Get medical attention if:
- You are throwing up
- Your symptoms get worse
- Your symptoms last longer than 1 hour
Heat Cramps
What to look for
- Heavy seating during intense exercise
- Muscle pain or spasms
What to do
- Stop physical activity and move to a cool place
- Drink water or a sports drink
- Wait for cramps to go away before you do any more physical activity

Sunburn
What to look for
- Painful, red, and warm skin
- Blisters on the skin
What to do
- Stay out of the sun until your sunburn heals
- Put on cool cloths on sunburned areas or take a cool bath
- Put moisturizing lotion on sunburned areas
- Do not break blister
Heat Rash
What to look for
- Red clusters of small blisters that look like pimples on the skin (usually on the neck, chest, groin or in elbow creases)
What to do
- Stay in cool, dry place
- Keep the rash dry
- Use powder (like baby powder) to soothe the rash
Texas A&M Commerce Rodeo Team Dominates At National Competition
Henry’s National Title Highlights A&M-Commerce Success at National Rodeo
COMMERCE, TX—For the second year in a row, a member of the Texas A&M University-Commerce Rodeo team captured a national championship at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyo.
Kincade Henry repeated as the National Champion in the men’s Tie Down Roping event, finishing with the lowest combined time of 35.8 seconds across four rounds of competition. His time of 8.1 seconds in the second round was tied for the fastest single-round time throughout the event.
Henry, who won the same event at the 2022 CNFR as a member of Panola College, becomes just the second A&M-Commerce Rodeo athlete to win an individual national title. Last year, Bryana Lehrmann was the first National Champion in program history, winning the Breakaway Roping and Women’s All-Around titles.
Cutter Carpenter wasn’t too far behind Henry, finishing second in the nation in Tie Down Roping with a four-round total time of 39 seconds flat. Rounding out the top five finishers was Ty Johnson, who finished fifth in the final standings of the Team Roping event after being paired up with Panola’s Cooper Parsley. Johnson was a late substitute for CNFR qualifier Trevor Kernick, who was unable to compete.
In addition to these accolades, Carpenter’s horse “Twix” was named the 2023 American Quarter Horse Association’s Horse of the Year in the men’s events. Carpenter and Twix won the award after earning the most combined points in the men’s timed events.
Overall, the men’s team captured a third-place finish in the team standings, the highest ever for an A&M-Commerce team at the CNFR. The women’s team placed 24th overall with just three competitors.
