Tuesday Game Day Features Soccer and Bi-District Basketball
Tuesday game day on Feb. 22 brings both soccer squads taking on Longview, plus the Bi-District round of playoffs for men’s basketball.
Men’s basketball are the first team up on Tuesday, Feb. 22 in Corsicana for the opening round of playoffs.
Coach Brandon Shaver’s team take on Huntsville for their Bi-District contest at Navarro College’s Wolens Special Events Center.
Huntsville made the playoffs as the 4 seed from District 16-5A, going 12-13 in the regular season (4-6 district).
Sulphur Springs on the other hand won seven straight to close out their season, en route to their first district crown in three seasons.
The playoffs tip off for Sulphur Springs basketball at 6 P.M.
Moving over to soccer, both squads take on Longview for the Feb. 22 edition of Tuesday game day. Men’s soccer begin a two-game home-stand today, starting with a big match hosting Longview.
Coach Alexi Upton’s team has to get a win over the second-placed Lobos if they wish to keep their spot as the current 4 seed.
On Friday men’s soccer hosts Mount Pleasant, a team Longview beat in PK’s 3-1. The shoot-out loss to the Lobos is the lone game for the Tigers to not end in victory in the first half of their district season.
Coach Upton’s team has to win or tie one of their two home games this week if they hope to keep up with Hallsville.
Sulphur Springs (3-3 district) kicks off with Longview to begin their two-game home-stand on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7:15 P.M.
Women’s soccer’s schedule is flipped this week. While the men are at home on Tuesday and Friday, the Lady Cats are on the road both game days.
And just like the Wildcats, Coach Javier Aguayo’s team play Longview and Mount Pleasant.
The two-game road-stand comes at a bad time for Sulphur Springs, in the midst of a two-game losing streak while also having lost four of five.
If the Lady Cats (1-5 district) can’t tie or win one of their two matches this week, or the rematch with Texas High next Tuesday, women’s soccer may find themselves out of the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
Coach Aguayo’s squad enters this week in sixth place.
Tuesday’s contest kicks off in Longview on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7:15 P.M.

Lady Cats Golf Finish Second in Mount Pleasant
Monday had Lady Cats golf in their second competition of the spring season in Mount Pleasant.
Coach Whitney Spigener’s team placed second. Sulphur Springs as a team compiled 375 points.
“This is probably the best tournament I’ve had team-wise in a long time,” Coach Whitney Spigener said about her team’s performance following the win Tuesday.
“They really stepped it up,” the Lady Cats golf coach said.
The second place finish was good enough for the Lady Cats to finish just 11 strokes behind Longview, the favorite to win district.
Allison Thomas shot 90 in Mount Pleasant, a 26-stroke improvement over her first outing in Rockwall on Valentine’s Day. Thomas finished third at the competition.
Kenzie Posey shot 91, finishing just behind Thomas in fourth.
Two Lady Cats shot 93: Mykylie Meador and McKenna Meskimen. Brylie Brock finished with 98 in Mount Pleasant.
Rounding out women’s golf from their Monday competition is Autumn Allen (101) and Ally Crump (121).
“Overall those scores are looking really good,” Coach Spigener said.
The Lady Cats golf coach said those scores are about where they need to be right now. Women’s golf “Still has a little bit of improvement to go before we can look at district,” Coach Spigener said.
Next up, women’s golf are back in action next Monday, Feb. 28 at the Dallas GAC.
Coach Spigener and the Lady Cats take on stiff competition in Dallas-area schools next Monday.

South Carolina Man Walked Away From Deputy During Traffic Stop, Found In Nearby Pasture
A South Carolina man allegedly walked away from a deputy who was searching his passenger during a traffic stop, but was found a short time later in a nearby pasture. Both he and the passenger were allegedly in possession of cocaine, deputies noted in arrest reports.
Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Isaac Foley at 9:43 p.m. Feb. 20, 2022, conducted a traffic stop on a Honda Hybrid car for traveling in the turn lane. Instead of pulling over on the side of the road, the driver stopped the car in the middle of the turn lane on State Highway 1554 south near County Road 2174. The deputy instructed the driver to safely exit the road and pull onto the shoulder. He reportedly did as requested.
The passenger was identified as William Fenton. The story he and the driver gave did not make any sense to the deputy, When both refused the deputy’s request to search the car, he asked them to step out of the car to talk to him. While the deputy patted Fenton down, he advised he did not give his permission to check for weapons. The passenger agreed to pull out his pockets, and began doing so, allowing the deputy to see a bag in his pocket.
The driver, however, wouldn’t allow the deputy to search him nor did he agree to pull out his pockets. In fact, the driver walked away from the deputy, talking on his cell phone as he did so, the deputy alleged in arrest reports. Suspecting the bag in the passenger’s pocket contained illegal contraband, the deputy opted to remain at the location with Fenton instead of chasing after the driver. He did, however, notify other deputies that the driver had fled on foot before he could get ID from him.
While talking to Fenton, the 40-year-old man admitted to having something illegal in his pocket. Foley had Fenton remove the item from his pocket and put it on the hood of the officer’s patrol vehicle. It turned out to be two Ziploc-style bags containing a white substance suspected to be cocaine.
Meanwhile, HCSO Deputies Drew Fisher, Zack Horne and Sgt. Tanner Steward had arrived in the area, located and took the driver into custody in a pasture off CR 2174. While taking the driver into custody, deputies alleged seeing two baggies containing a white substance suspected to be cocaine in a towel.
Both Fenton and the driver, identified in arrest reports as a 35-year-old Henry Lee Woods Jr. of Kingstree, South Carolina, were taken into custody at 10:06 p.m. Feb. 20 and transported to the county jail. The substance found near Henry tested positive for cocaine and weighed 2.41 grams, including packaging. The substance removed from Fenton’s pocket also field-tested positive for cocaine; it weighed 2.897 grams, including packaging.
Consequently, both Fenton and Woods were booked into the county jail at 12:25 a.m. Feb. 21, 2022, on a a possession of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance charge. Woods also was charged with attempted tampering with physical evidence and evading arrest or detention. Both remained in the county jail Monday, Feb. 21, 2022. Bond was set at $25,000 each on the controlled substance charges. Woods’ bond was also set at $10,000 on the tampering charge and $2,000 on the evading arrest or detention charge, according to jail reports.

Dallas Woman Lead Trooper On 7-Mile Vehicle Pursuit Along I-30 East
A 29-year-old Dallas woman lead a trooper on a 7-mile vehicle pursuit along Interstate 30 through Sulphur Springs to Brinker Saturday afternoon, according to arrest reports.
An off-duty Texas Department of Public Safety trooper reported seeing the woman on Interstate 30 east at mile marker 110 in Cumby, and stopped to see if she needed assistance. “She stated they shot him, jumped back in her car and continued” driving a blue Nissan Versa on I-30 east.
When DPS Trooper George Greenway spotted the vehicle as it passed through Sulphur Springs at mile marker 122 on I-30 east, he activated the emergency lights on his patrol car in an attempt to stop the woman. Instead of stopping, she sped up to 90 miles per hour in the 75 mph speed zone. He advised he was in pursuit of the fleeing vehicle.
Another officer in the area on I-30 east of Sulphur springs put down spike strips, which the car ran over at mile marker 129 as the car approached Brinker, just east of Sulphur Springs. The Nissan Versa stopped in the left lane, where the driver was taken into custody at 2:56 p.m. Saturday for the 7-mile vehicle pursuit.
Letyeerra Latrice Andrews was transported to Hopkins County jail, where she remained Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, on an evading arrest or detention with a vehicle charge. Bond was set at $10,000 on the third-degree felony charge.

Wildcats Team Tennis Has Solid Two Weeks
Last Friday, team tennis travelled to Tyler to participate in their tournament and fared very well.
Even with missing a few Lady Cats (Mykylie Meador and Kaylie Schumacher), team tennis had a solid outing in Tyler last Friday.
Ella Sand and Trinity Luckett were put together just last Wednesday, but left Tyler last weekend with a huge win.
Sand and Luckett placed third in girls’ doubles. In mixed doubles, Oscar Guerrero and Jessie Lee also placed third in Tyler.
The tournament featured schools such as Tyler, Tyler Legacy, Jacksonville, and Whitehouse.
It has been a busy spring for team tennis. While their first spring contest in Sherman was cancelled just after the new year began, Coach Martinez and Co. have competed in three tourneys.
A big highlight came from the second meet, in Kilgore on Friday, Feb. 4.
Two Lady Cats bested the top two girls from Longview, a feat not accomplished since Coach Martinez began coaching in Sulphur Springs over 10 years ago.
The team tennis coach said that win over the Lady Lobos helps Sulphur Springs come seeding time.
But before the Wildcats and Lady Cats can shift their focus to district season later in March, they first travel to Waxahachie for fourth tournament of the spring season.
Friday’s competition brings some more solid competition, like Red Oak and Nacogdoches, teams from the DFW area that Sulphur Springs might not play had they not taken the invitation to the meet.
The fourth tournament for team tennis begins Friday, Feb. 25 in Waxahachie at 8 A.M.
