JAKE LEG – JUNE 25, 2015 by Eddie Trapp

While in Galveston riding around with the Glossup’s a while back we saw a man limping across a parking lot. Ronny said his dad, Weldon, referred to people like that as having a “jake leg.” I wondered where in the world that phrase came from. When we got home in a few days I did some research. Throughout history, many men (and women) have resorted to occasionally “taking a nip” of alcohol for various reasons. I remember several older...

William ‘Bill’ Bradford

No one title could identify him. There were several. No one specific phrase could be said to be his. Again, there were several. William Earl (Bill) (Brad) Bradford was a man of many titles and several phrases. He became a part of KSST in March 1948 approximately 18 months after the radio station opened in an upstairs studio on the downtown square in Sulphur Springs. At his death in 2013, his voice was a part of the everyday of almost...

A Life Remembered – Antonio Isaac Perez

Family, friends, fellow students, team members, band members, SSISD administrators, high school teachers and staff, school board members, and many others, a majority wearing Sulphur Springs High School colors, filed past his portrait, his medals won, his letter of acceptance from the University of North Texas, and a Green Bay Packers jersey. On the stage, his varsity letter jacket, and variegated flowers stood in remembrance. The...

Jots and Titles # 1370 by Eddie Trapp, February 12, 2015

From my ledger. February, Friday the thirteenth, 1987. Tommy Ingram told me he read in the paper it was the first time in history that Friday the thirteenth came on a Full Moon. I sorta doubt that. The guy that put it in the paper must have been confused. I took a day of personal leave from school today. Got to the Charleston Store at 8:30 and later went to Danny Daniels place north of Vasco to a switch cane thicket on the bank of old...

Author and Coach John Pearce

John Pearce, a 1965 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School, who wrote a book on the early history of Wildcats football, recently published a book called, “Ever Remember”, based on a diary written by his grandmother, Alma Caldwell. She was 16 at the time she wrote about Sulphur Springs’ life from June 1913 to June 1914. Along with school activities, the diary discussed her budding romance with Emmett Thornton, whom she later married....

Columbus Bean And Poor Man, September 25, 2014 #1351

More about our recent fishing trip to Galveston. Tuesday, September 9. Wind and tides bring strange items to the beach. Among the seaweed this trip we found three, relatively rare, large seeds. Some were heart shaped, mahogany brown, and two to almost three inches in diameter. A quick glance reminded me of a buckeye seed and later research showed the seeds to be good luck charms like buckeyes. One looked exactly like a little...

Ty Rollison Day

Hopkins County Judge Robert Newsom proclaimed Thursday as Tyrik Rollison Day in Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County for the recognition the athlete has brought to the area through his sports career. Rollison, perhaps the greatest quarterback in Wildcats’ history, led the team to a state championship in 2008 and was named an All-State quarterback. Thursday night Rollison opened his senior season as quarterback for Texas...

Coons and Canoes #1338

A few days ago we traveled to Galveston for our annual June fishing trip and following are some of the high lights: Monday’s departure time coincided with a norther and heavy rain that stayed with us almost all the way. Our travel trailer wasn’t quite level enough at the campground to suit Jean and I had to raise up one corner and put one sheet of toilet paper under it. Not really. Fished Tuesday at Retillion Road Beach and used...
