TxDOT Seeks to End One Fatality Accident a Day Since November 2000

Texas marks a grim milestone this weekend as at least one fatality has occurred each and every day on state roadways since Nov. 7, 2000. That’s 5,478 consecutive days with at least one fatality. In an effort to end this deadly 15-year streak, the Texas Department of Transportation, through its #EndTheStreakTX campaign, reminds drivers to stay alert, obey traffic laws and take personal responsibility behind the wheel. “More than 50,000...

COMMENTARY: I Trust Hopkins County Memorial Hospital by Jim Rogers

I go on Medicare January 1. That being said, the problems at our local hospital are personal. The hospital gave care to my dad instead of our having to travel to Dallas constantly for medical care at the veteran’s hospital there. Chuck Jones saved his life once. Dad died at home at age 87. My mom has had emergency care when she broke first one leg, then a shoulder, and later the other leg. Mom lives on our farm in the county. Senior...

Flee the Flu

Flee the Flu In last week’s column, I discussed several great opportunities that take place during the fall season.  One event that is not great at all is the flu season!  While it isn’t possible to predict exactly what the flu season will be like, we know that flu spread every year.  Flu outbreaks can happen as early as October and can last as late as May, typically peaking between December and February. The best way to protect...

What Does Family & Consumer Sciences Mean?

What Does Family & Consumer Sciences Mean? I’m going to get up on my soap box for a little while, so be prepared!  Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offers a wealth of information, and it’s right here in your community!  Often when individuals call our office, they ask for “the County Agent”.  If I am the one who happens to answer the phone, my response is, “What is the nature of your question so I will know which agent can...

ALUMINUM BATS – AUGUST 13, 2015

Due to the heat a few of us are staying inside more lately. That requires watching extra television and that means more baseball. Every few games a wooden bat breaks and folks go to dodging. Somebody will say, “Why don’t they use aluminum bats and stop that problem?” It seems solving “that problem” would create many more. The most important reason is safety for fans and players. The player in most danger is the pitcher. Maybe you have...

TxDOT Steps Up “Drink, Drive, Go to Jail” Campaign

As summer celebrations enter their final weeks, the Texas Department of Transportation is taking its “DWI Not So Fun House” to community events across the state as part of its “Drink, Drive, Go to Jail” campaign. The vintage-style interactive carnival trailer allows the public to experience the dangerous and potentially deadly effects of impaired driving. “Don’t turn your summer fun into a life-changing tragedy by being irresponsible...

Summer Fun with Hopkins County 4-H

As I prepare this column, the sights, sounds, smells, and excitement of Multi-county 4-H camp are still fresh on my mind!  Hopkins County took a group of 20 4-H members and leaders to Lakeview Baptist Conference Center in Lone Star for three days of activities, workshops, team building sessions, and recreation. Workshop sessions included Geo-caching, Human Foosball, Electricity, Pillow-making, Ropes Course, and Junior Master...
