Jail Construction:What to Do With Old Jail?

As of Wednesday construction on the Hopkins County Jail is 34 days behind. County Judge Robert Newsom noted the 7 inches of rainfall in the county is the primary delay. He hopes to see construction catch up so that inmates can be moved in October of this year. Construction continues under budget. Senate Bill 1158, filled last week by State Senator Bob Hall, calls for allowing citizens of Hopkins County to vote on a proposition that would allow the lowering for property taxes and introducing a sales tax to pay for the construction of the new county jail. During Monday morning’s meeting of the Hopkins County Commissioners Court, the Court recognized Retired Captain Joe Reid Scott for his 19 years of service as the county’s Veterans Affairs Officer. Cody Shaw Arraigned in Capital Murder Case

Hopkins County will have to pick up the costs of attorneys for one of two men indicted for capital murder in what are expected to be a death penalty cases. County Judge Robert Newsom said an insurance policy would pay for attorneys for Cody Scott Shaw of Emory. The policy will not cover co-defendant Patrick Wayne McMahan of Sulphur Springs. Jail Project Under Budget, Sales Tax Bill Moves Forward

Hopkins County Judge Robert Newsom says a bill is ready to be filed in Austin to allow the county to fund its’ $16-million jail project with an increase in local sales tax.
